First there was the "Creation." This was when Notch first thought up MineCraft. The very first version was called "cave game".
Next was MineCraft Classic (A.K.A Minecraft 0.0.11a). This was first public version, only had creative mode, and a lot less features than current MineCraft.
Then there was Survival Test, a version of Classic. It was the introduction of Survival Mode. It added hostile mobs, mining and a health bar.
Then came Indev. Indev was the first public release of Survival Mode, and added a whole bunch of new features.
Next was Infdev, which added automatically expanding maps.
Then came Alpha. Alpha was a milestone for MineCraft, and with it came loads of new features. It was also updated each Friday, these updates were called, "Seecret Friday Updates".
Then there was Beta. A whole new bunch of features. Indeed, the Yogscast described it as, "A whole new game." During beta came the Adventure Update, focusing on exploring, combat, and add a ending to the game. Features added include new terrain generator, new mobs, blocks, biomes, and items. More generated structures where added; NPC villages, strongholds, abandoned mine shafts. Changes to general gameplay include an improved combat system including critical hits and experience, a reintroduced Creative Mode, Hardcore Mode, and a way to finish the game by traveling to The End and defeating the Ender Dragon.
And now we have MineCraft 1.0, which was released during MineCon 2011. Since 1.0 was released, several updates have happened. (1.0.1, 1.1, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.3, 1.2.4) Tomorrow will be MineCraft 1.3.
